Kristina Alayan

Kristina J. Alayan is the Association Dean for Library & Technology and Associate Law School Professor at the University of Maryland. She oversees all aspects of library and technology operations and services through strategic and collaborative leadership to support the advancement of the scholarly, pedagogical, and clinical goals of the law school. She is dedicated to ensuring the library is an active, thriving center for learning and innovation for the law school community. Before joining the law faculty in 2021, she was the law library director and assistant professor of law at the Vernon E. Jordan Jr., Law Library at the Howard University School of Law. She has also worked in various roles at the Georgetown University Law Center. Her career began at Duke Law as the Foreign and International Law Librarian – a position she held for five years.

She has served in numerous leadership positions at the local, regional, national, and international levels. She was elected chair of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Council of Chapter Presidents and appointed chair of the AALL Awards Committee, which oversees granting the association’s highest honor. In 2021, she was elected to both the AALL executive board and executive committee of the USMAI Consortium. She has also served on the board of the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) for two terms. She has been an active member of the Law Librarians’ Society of Washington, DC (LLSDC) and served on the board for four years. During her tenure as president, she established the LLSDC Blueprint, which served to operationalize LLSDC’s commitment to diversity and racial justice. She was recently elected to the Lyrasis Board of Trustees.


Loyd Auerbach

Loyd Auerbach, M.S., is a LexisNexis Knowledge & Research Consultant based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is a 30+ year veteran with LexisNexis with diverse experience centered around training and presentations as well as consulting with information professionals and power users. He was away from LexisNexis for 10 years, during which he worked for several law firms as a contract librarian and researcher, in the library of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and as a public speaking coach. That’s in addition to his expertise with chocolate and parapsychology/the paranormal. He is an adjunct professor at Atlantic University, an instructor for the Rhine Education Center, and a published author of several books. Loyd received his Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from Northwestern University, and his Master of Science degree in Parapsychology from John F. Kennedy University.


Tina Dumas

Tina Dumas is the Senior Knowledge Management & Library Manager at Nossaman LLP, a mid-sized firm with 10 offices in the U.S. She is based in San Francisco and leads a team of 3 other Librarians to support the KM and research needs of the firm. In addition to the usual legal and competitive intelligence research, the department also manages the firm-wide Intranet and internal client-relationship management (CRM) database.

Tina received the NOCALL Professional Achievement Award in 2023. She has an M.L.S. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She has worked in 5-6 (depending on how you count mergers) law firms, mostly in San Francisco for more than 30 years. She prefers mid-sized firms where she can get to know people on a more personal level. Tina is a Past Chair of PLL[IP], and a Past President of NOCALL and has served on numerous Committees for AALL and NOCALL.


Tim Fox

As Director of Practice Innovation and Analytics, Tim Fox oversees the firm’s Data Analytics, Legal Project Management, and Practice Intelligence functions and teams. These teams consist of a large and diverse group of analysts, attorneys, data scientists, developers, economists, legal professionals, and statisticians. In this role, Tim helps the firm and its clients better understand and leverage their data through analytics and data visualizations. Some examples of the work that Tim leads include, conducting exposure analyses, damages calculations, pay equity audits, and other analysis for clients, providing advanced analytics and developing custom reporting systems to clients, locating experience data and making accessible to the firm, automating workflows and processes, and developing AI solutions to help make data and information more accessible at the firm. In his role, Tim works closely with other administrative groups at the firm as well as directly with practice groups, attorneys, and clients.

Tim has an extensive background in technology and the law. Prior to joining the firm, Tim helped form and lead LegalMation as its Chief Product and Information Officer. LegalMation is a legal tech company that pioneered the use of AI to automate early-stage litigation tasks. Before that, Tim was a practicing attorney for 7+ years with a variety of firms focusing primarily on patent litigation and litigation involving software and technology. Prior to attending law school, Tim spent 5 years working in tech for a Fortune 500 company.

Tim is admitted to practice in all California state and federal courts as well as in the Eastern District of Texas. He is also an adjunct faculty at USC’s Gould School of Law where he teaches a variety of courses.


Mark Gediman

Mark Gediman is a Senior Research Analyst for Alston & Bird, LLP. He is past president of the Southern California Association of Law Libraries as well as co-founder and co-chair of the PLL-IP Competitive Intelligence Caucus. Mark writes and presents regularly on competitive intelligence, research, and library management issues for the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), California Lawyers Association, Legal Marketing Association (LMA), the Special Libraries Association (SLA), SWALL, SCALL, NoCALL, ACI, and HALL. He contributed to Business Intelligence for Law Firms (Ark Group, 2012), Strategic Intelligence for Law Firms (Ark Group, 2018), Innovations in Legal KM (Ark Group, 2017) and articles in AALL Spectrum, Practicing Law Management Week, Paralegal Today and Facts & Findings – The Magazine of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Mark is a graduate of the University of California-Riverside.

 


Cindy Guyer

Cindy Guyer is a Senior Knowledge & Research Analyst with the multinational law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP. She conducts legal and business research for attorneys and business professionals firmwide. Cindy is a member of the firm’s Knowledge & Research Services, Artificial Intelligence Working Group, collaborating with a diverse team of librarians and information technologists to evaluate and implement AI tools across the firm. Before joining O’Melveny, she worked at the University of Southern California (USC) Gould School of Law for 16 years as a senior law librarian and adjunct assistant professor of Law. She continues to teach at USC as a faculty member in their Master of Management in Library and Information Science program. Cindy received her BA and JD from USC, an MLIS from San Jose State University, and is a licensed attorney in California.

 


Tanya Livshits

Tanya Livshits is the Manager of Research at DLA Piper, where she manages a national team of researchers. Prior to joining DLA Piper in 2022, Tanya was a Research Manager at Holland & Knight and Director of Research Services at Irell and Manella. Tanya is an active member of SCALL, currently serving as the President, and AALL, currently serving as an AMPC team lead. Tanya presented a similar program at last year’s SCALL Institute.

 


Tiffany O’Neill

Tiffany O’Neil is the Director of Knowledge Management & Technology Innovation at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves and Savitch LLP. Tiffany leads the firm’s knowledge management (KM) and records/office services functions while chairing the firm’s internal Technology Innovation group. With over 25 years of experience in KM and research, she oversees the firm’s investigative, business and legal research as well as evaluates and implements KM tools and processes. Tiffany trains attorneys and staff on efficient research strategies; conducts contract negotiations, budgeting, and supervising; and advances the performance of various legal and administrative departments by establishing and implementing valuable workflow solutions. She is also a member of the Firm’s Technology Committee. In addition to working in the legal field, Tiffany was an information specialist with McKinsey & Company, a leading management consultant firm.

 


Damien Riehl

Damien Riehl is a lawyer and technologist with experience in complex litigation, digital forensics, and software development. A lawyer since 2002 and coder since 1985, Damien clerked for the chief judges of state and federal courts, practiced in complex litigation for over a decade, has led teams of cybersecurity and world-spanning digital forensics investigations, and has built AI-backed legal software.

Co-Chair of the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Connected and Automated Vehicles, he is helping recommend changes to Minnesota statutes, rules, and policies — all related to connected and autonomous vehicles. Damien is Chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s AI Committee, which oversees an AI Sandbox to promote Access to Justice (A2J).

At SALI, the legal data standard, Damien built and greatly expanded the taxonomy of over 18,000 legal tags that matter, helping the legal industry’s development of Generative AI, analytics, and interoperability.

At vLex Group — which includes Fastcase, NextChapter, and Docket Alarm — Damien helps lead the design, development, and expansion of various products, integrating AI-backed technologies (e.g., GPT) into a billion-document dataset from 100+ countries, all to improve legal workflows.


Joy Shoemaker

Joy Shoemaker is the Librarian at the United States Court of Appeals in Pasadena. In her more than 20 years as a librarian, Joy has previously worked at the University of California—Irvine School of Law Library, the Supreme Court of the United States Library, and Duke University School of Law Library. She has also taught legal research and library courses as an adjunct professor at the Catholic University of America, the University of Southern California, and Southwestern Law School.

Joy earned a BA in economics from DePauw University, a JD from Indiana University School of Law—Bloomington, and an MLS from Indiana University School of Librarian and Information Science—Bloomington. Joy currently serves on the SCALL Board as the immediate past president, as an AALL Economic Status of Law Librarians Committee member, and as the Chair of the AALL Council of Chapter Presidents. Joy was profiled as a “Leader of Today” in Celebrating Diversity: A Legacy of Minority Leadership in the American Association of Law Libraries in 2018.
